Do I Need a Passport to get an ITIN?
The ITIN application process can be a little confusing to first-time applicants, and no one wants to have to reapply just because of a simple oversight. That’s why it’s important to know your options for completing the ITIN number application, including the options that allow you to get your number even if you don’t currently have a passport. The application process requires just three things:

-A U.S. tax return (unless you are excepted)
-Adequate identification documents

Your passport is the easiest option to use because it is the only identification option that doesn’t require a second piece of ID to verify it. If you don’t have a passport, or if you don’t currently have access to it for any reason, you can also choose from these options:
-A current national identification document
-A driver’s license
-U.S. Immigration and Citizenship ID
-State ID
-Birth certificate
-Visa issued by the Secretary of State
-U.S. military ID card
-Foreign military ID card
-Foreign voter’s registration card
Don’t forget that you will also need your tax return, unless you qualify for one of the ITIN exceptions. Once you have an ITIN, you’ll need to fill out a w4 form so your federal income tax can be withheld.
Where Can I Get a W4 Form?
The w4 form is the form you fill out with an employer to make sure you have the proper income tax withholding set up. Most employers will supply you with a form themselves, but you can also download one from the IRS resource website if you need to.
